The same steps as the licence journey in the app, checked against the pages linked under each step. Fees are not listed: pay the fees your institute or the portal shows.

Light vehicle (car)

  1. Check you can apply

In Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, traffic files go through the Ministry of Interior (MOI) system. For a car you can open a file from 17 and a half, and the licence is issued at 18. Your visa should be from that emirate; if it is not, show proof that you work or study there. You must also pass a medical check.

  2. Pass an eye test Eye test

Pass an eye test before your traffic file is opened. Driving institutes and opticians approved by the police licensing department can do it. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, wear them for the test and bring them to every lesson.

  3. Open your traffic file Traffic file

Open your traffic file through the MOI app or website with UAE Pass, or at your driving institute. You need your Emirates ID and a tenancy contract. Your learner's permit is linked to the file and is issued once you pay its fee. The file stays open for 6 months after the last action on it.

  4. Register at a driving institute

Register at Sharjah Driving Institute or another approved school, online or at a branch, and pay the fees shown in full or in parts. Choose a manual or automatic car. A licence earned in an automatic car does not let you drive a manual one.

  5. Attend the theory lectures Lectures

Theory lectures cover the main parts of the car, road signs, lane use, defensive driving and the causes of crashes. In Sharjah they run in Arabic, English or Urdu, in morning or evening sessions. You take the theory test when you have finished them.

  6. Book your theory test Theory booked

When your lectures are finished, book the theory test through your institute or your licensing authority's app or website. Add the date and time to your checklist in the Learners Test UAE app, then use the app's practice tests to work on your weak topics before the day.

  7. Pass the theory test Theory test

Sharjah's theory test is taken on a computer in Arabic, English or Urdu, and a reading system can play the questions aloud. 8. Take your driving lessons

Practical training starts in the institute's large training yard, where you learn to control the car and practise common manoeuvres. When you pass the yard test, you move on to driving in city traffic. Lessons last 40 minutes, and your instructor tells you when you are ready for each test.

  9. Pass the yard test

Your first practical test takes place in the institute's yard. It checks how you turn, make a U-turn, change lanes, reverse a long way, stop on a slope and park. You must pass it before you can train on city roads.

Source: Sharjah Driving Institute: car, motorcycle and heavy vehicle courses (test format)

  10. Pass the assessment drive

After your city lessons, an assessment drive checks how you use the car, react to traffic and follow the law. You must have paid all fees due and finished your planned lessons first. Passing it shows you are ready to prepare for the final road test.

  11. Pass the road test Road test

The road test is the last stage. Before it, you must have passed all earlier tests, paid all fees due and kept your traffic file valid. Bring your original Emirates ID. The examiner checks lane changes, roundabouts, U-turns, overtaking and your general safety.

  12. Get your licence

After passing the road test, apply for your licence in the MOI app, on the MOI website or at a service centre. Pay the issue fees shown, which are lower for a one-year licence. Your licence can be added to a digital wallet on your phone.

  13. Your first licence period

A new UAE licence is valid for 1 year if you are under 21, or 2 years if you are 21 or older. Renew it before it expires; you must pay any traffic fines first. Drive with extra care in these early years, because offences add black points to your licence.
